This 6th form pathway has been designed for 16 - 19 students with an interest in working in the retail sector for example, shops, stores, supermarkets and other retail outlets. The practical nature of the course offers the ideal preparation for an apprenticeship, supported or full employment, and volunteer work in this sector
Is it for me?
If you like the idea of working in a retail setting dealing with and serving customers, are approachable and take a pride in your appearance, then this pathway could be just what you are looking for. You will also need to be responsible, and have a good awareness of health and safety.
What will I be learning?
You will be learning about retail processes, including food safety, stock control and checkouts, as well as basic elements of customer care. You will receive on-the-job training for checkouts, replenishment, and high risk food safety, and experience what it is like working on the shop floor.
How will I learn and be assessed?
Much of the learning will be work-based and take place in a local Sainsbury’s store or other retail outlet. You will undergo a thorough induction, as well as being assessed on practical skills and competencies. You will then demonstrate your knowledge on each unit by means of a portfolio of evidence.
How will I be supported?
Groups are small and students are supported by a specialist tutor and groups may also include a learning support assistant. Whilst on work placements, all students are supported by a specially trained Job Coach with additional support being provided by Sainsbury’s staff. Students are also encouraged to seek the advice of a careers adviser.
What qualification will I gain?
You will work towards achieving a Level 1 Certificate in Retail Skills accredited by the City and Guilds awarding body. Success in achieving this qualification will help to set you on the right path for a job in retail, and will help to prepare you for any training that you may undertake in future when you secure a job.
What can I do during and after my qualification?
As soon as students are competent and confident with the qualification, they will have the opportunity to apply for paid casual employment alongside their studies.
On completion and if successful, students will be encouraged to apply for a suitable apprenticeship or either part-time, or full-time paid employment in a shop or supermarket.
