KS 4 Options
In Key Stage 4, in addition to the core subjects of Maths, English, Science, ICT, PE, RE, Personal & Social Education (PSE), Citizenship and Careers Education, pupils are required to choose three additional subjects from a range of options.
This broadening of the curriculum aims to give pupils more choice, and enables them to individualise their programme according to their own particular strengths and interests. It is hoped that this will help prepare pupils for leaving school and provide transition routes into further education, training or employment post-16.
Before entering Year 10, pupils have the opportunity to make the following choices :
A. One from the following National Curriculum subjects
B. Two from the following vocational subjects
- Animal Care
- Hospitality and Catering
- Motor Vehicle Maintenance
All pupils have the opportunity to try out these activities towards the end of Year 9, before having to make their final choices.
Where the above options are considered to be unsuitable, either because they are of no interest to a particular pupil, or because a pupil is not yet ready to join the course, one or more of the following options may be offered instead :
- Independent Living Skills
- Social Enrichment
- Vocational Tasters
More information about these alternative options can be obtained from school.
The school is fortunate enough to have specialist facilities and resources for the teaching of many of the Key Stage 4 options, as follows:
- Fish, reptiles, small mammals and poultry in science
- Construction work areas for plumbing, bricklaying, and painting and decorating
- Small hair salon
- Large greenhouse and equipment
- Cafe and food preparation area
- Motor Vehicle workshop
- Specialist classrooms for Art, Food Studies and Design Technology
We employ specialist staff to deliver the courses in most of these areas, including a bricklayer and two motor mechanics, a trained hairdresser, and several staff with practical catering experience.
