Relationship & Sex Education Curriculum

Relationship and Sex Education at Combe Pafford

Our school's policy on sex and relationship education (SRE) is based on the requirements of the Education Act 1996, the Learning & Skills Act 2000 and the DfE document ‘Sex and Relationship Education Guidance’ (DfES 0116/2000). This continues to be the recommended SRE guidance under the current government (from 2014).

In the DfE document, SRE is defined as 'learning about physical, moral and emotional development'. The guidance states, 'It is about understanding the importance of marriage for family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care. It is also about the teaching of sex, sexuality, and sexual health'.

SRE is part of the personal, social and health education (PSHE) curriculum in our school. We have therefore used the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study to help inform the content of our SRE lessons.  We have also received training and advice from their approved SRE consultants; the Christopher Winter Project.

When we inform our pupils about sex and relationships issues, we do this with regard to morality and individual responsibility, and in a way that allows children to ask and explore moral questions.

Here are the Curriculum Plans for PSHE at Combe Pafford. You will find the Relationships and Sex Education objectives listed under the Spring Term section for each year group.

If you wish to, please also view the letter you should have received at the end of the Christmas term in the 'Parents' section under 'Letters Home'. Feel free to contact the school and ask to speak to your child's tutor or Mrs Davey or Mr Lock if you have any concerns about your pupil taking part in the lessons, or would like to discuss the curriculum further.

Thank you

Mrs Davey (teacher in charge of PSHE), the school governors and Mr Lock (headteacher).
