KS4 Curriculum Intent

City and Guilds 6219 Level 1 Construction Skills

This qualification can provide pupils with the basic skills and knowledge of the construction industry that could allow them to develop and progress into meaningful employment which, is beneficial for both the individuals and for the local economy. Construction does not sit within the top 6 sectors of significant importance for Torbay (Torbay Economic Strategy 2022-2030) however, there are numerous small to extremely large construction projects within a 20 mile radius that could provide potential long term employment for our pupils.

The curriculum intention:

Our intention is to provide our pupils with a foundation of knowledge and skills in the construction industry, increasing their awareness of a range of trades, supporting their onward journey to higher education and ultimately into the job market. We aim to focus this qualification around a range of trades that are related to the construction industry, giving our pupils a better chance of employment if they choose to enter this job area. We intend to keep the qualification fluid by observing current trends in the construction job market and choosing content to support current needs where this data is available.

Our curriculum delivery:

This qualification will be delivered in house using the industry standard facilities that we have. Pupils will be supported in working to their own strengths throughout a range of units and they will be assessed using a range of assessment methods to ensure that they have the best possible chance to succeed. Pupils will be given opportunities to develop individual skills and personal confidence with using the various tools and techniques of the trades featured within the units of study. Alongside this, pupils will learn to appreciate the need for effective health and safety procedures.

Benefits to Pupils (Implementation):

Pupils will have an improved knowledge of a range of construction jobs and trades that are available within the current local job markets and have an increased knowledge of the skills required to fulfil those roles successfully. Pupils will have gained a level 1 qualification at a level appropriate to them which they can carry forward into the next part of their journey towards successful employment.

Intent
