Year 8 Golden Hind Trip

Year 8 swapped their pencils for eye patches and their pens for swords as they enjoyed a day out in Brixham as a hook for learning about pirates.

The children were split into two groups and had the chance to climb aboard the five decks of the Golden Hind Museum Ship, with many hands-on exhibits, giving visitors an insight into life on Sir Francis Drake's Tudor galleon.

We had our own guide who gave us a flavour of what life was like aboard a pirate's ship hundreds of years ago.

The children learned about what food the pirates would have eaten, how they survived on board the Golden Hind and the route they took around the world. We also got an insight into the punishments dished out for disobedient pirates and the treasure they stole from the Spanish fleet.

The children enjoyed getting dressed up in pirate costume and indulging in a spot of role play.

As part of the trip, we also wandered down to the breakwater for our lunch, giving children the chance to play on the beach. It was an enjoyable trip and the children’s behaviour was praised by staff upon the Golden Hind.
